BRIN targets January 2027 launch for Indonesia's first sovereign EO satellite
constellation
Indonesia's BRIN said its domestically built NEO-1 Earth observation satellite is targeted to launch in January 2027.
what happened
At Indonesia's satellite program 50th-anniversary event in Jakarta on July 8, National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) head Arif Satria said the Nusantara Earth Observation (NEO-1) satellite, built domestically with a 65% local component level, is targeted to launch in January 2027, per Antara. NEO-1 is a mini-satellite intended for medium- and high-resolution imaging supporting mapping, agriculture, disaster mitigation and maritime vessel tracking; Satria said mission design, software, testing and ground-station support were all developed by Indonesian researchers.
why it matters
A domestically built sovereign EO satellite reduces Indonesia's reliance on foreign imagery providers for government mapping and disaster-response programs, a pattern regional EO resellers and constellation operators are already watching elsewhere (Italy's IRIDE, India's SatSure-backed efforts) as sovereign capability becomes a competing or complementary channel to commercial imagery contracts.
