what happened

Sky Perfect JSAT and ispace signed a memorandum of understanding on July 16 to study using JSAT Space Line's commercial ground station network to communicate with ispace's ULTRA lunar lander, per Via Satellite and Telecompaper. The companies will exchange technical information and conduct system compatibility studies, and will also examine using the service as a backup to ESA's ESOC ground station network. The study targets ispace's Mission 3, currently planned for 2028.

why it matters

A second commercial ground-network option for lunar missions reduces ispace's reliance on ESA's ESOC infrastructure and gives JSAT Space Line a foothold in deep-space communications services, a market Japan is trying to build out domestically ahead of its own lunar exploration push.
