Japan's IHI and Finland's Kuva Space signed a memorandum of understanding to explore manufacturing and operating Kuva's Hyperfield-2 hyperspectral satellites in Japan, per SpaceNews, with an orbital demonstration planned for 2027 and potential orders that year. About 20 Hyperfield-2 microsatellites, a 70-kilogram step up from Kuva's 12-kilogram Hyperfield-1 cubesats, would give IHI's planned 100-satellite multi-sensor constellation daily coverage of roughly 20 million square kilometers across Japan and neighboring regions, including detection of vessels without an active AIS transponder.
why it matters
IHI already has ICEYE (SAR) and SatVu (thermal) tied into its multi-sensor constellation plan; adding Kuva's short-wave-infrared hyperspectral capability would extend Japan's sovereign EO buildout into material-identification sensing so far concentrated among a handful of Western hyperspectral operators. For Kuva, a Japanese manufacturing and operating tie-up would be an early proof point for hyperspectral EO's commercial case beyond straight imagery resale, and its first sovereign-constellation foothold in Asia.
