what happened

NASA and Northrop Grumman will repurpose hardware and interfaces developed for the canceled Gateway Habitation and Logistics Outpost (HALO) module into three Lunar Infrastructure Demo missions, LID-1, LID-2, and LID-3, per Northrop Grumman's own release and Spaceflight Now. The missions will test lunar surface power, thermal, autonomy, communications, and hosted payload services able to survive the lunar night near the Moon's South Pole, beginning within NASA's Moon Base Phase One, which runs through 2029; no launch dates or contract value were disclosed. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman issued a stop-work order on the HALO contract, which had grown to $1.9 billion, in April 2026 after a Standing Review Board found a "zero percent likelihood of meeting the launch readiness date." Northrop Grumman vice president David Schiller said the company's "ready-to-fly, reliable HALO technologies allow NASA to move faster."

why it matters

This confirms NASA's shift from an orbiting Gateway station to surface-first lunar infrastructure is now converting existing contractor hardware rather than starting over, giving Northrop Grumman a path to recover value from a canceled program and giving other Artemis contractors a template for repurposing stalled Gateway-era work into surface demonstrations.
