Planet launches national satellite data program with Rwanda
Planet Labs · Rwanda Space Agency
Planet's near-daily imagery is now available to Rwandan government agencies, universities and startups under a new national program.
what happened
Planet Labs and the Government of Rwanda launched a national satellite data program on August 10, Planet's first such program in Africa, per Planet's own newsroom. The program, managed by the Rwanda Space Agency, gives government agencies, public universities, selected startups and development partners access to Planet's near-daily satellite imagery to support agriculture and food security monitoring, forest health tracking, urban planning and disaster preparedness; universities also gain access for undergraduate education and Earth observation research.
why it matters
A government-wide national data-access program, rather than a single-agency contract, is a distribution model Planet can point to when pitching other national governments on sovereign EO access, and it gives Rwandan startups working on agriculture, forestry or disaster-response tools a daily imagery feed they would otherwise have to buy piecemeal.
