Firefly and Lockheed Martin extended their multi-launch deal to up to 25 Alpha flights through 2031, on the upgraded Alpha Block II rocket.
what happened
Firefly Aerospace said Aug. 11 it extended its multi-launch agreement with Lockheed Martin for up to 25 dedicated Alpha launches through 2031, a two-year extension of the companies' existing deal. The missions will fly on Firefly's upgraded Alpha Block II configuration, targeting the 1,000 kg payload class for government and commercial customers. Firefly, Lockheed Martin and Seagate Space are also jointly developing sea-based launch concepts using Seagate's Gateway offshore launch platform.
why it matters
The extension locks in years of dedicated launch backlog for Firefly's Alpha vehicle from an anchor prime contractor as it ramps production of the Block II upgrade, and gives Lockheed Martin committed, dedicated access to the 1,000 kg payload class for national-security and technology-demonstration missions instead of competing for rideshare slots. The Seagate Space sea-launch collaboration is an early signal both companies are exploring alternative, more flexible launch-site access.
