JAXA launches Michibiki 7 navigation satellite on H3 rocket's 9th flight

JAXA launched the H3 Launch Vehicle's ninth flight from Tanegashima Space Center on August 11 (JST), carrying the Michibiki No. 7 (QZS-7) satellite for Japan's Quasi-Zenith Satellite System. JAXA's own release states QZS-7 separated roughly 29 minutes after liftoff and was injected into its planned orbit. Nikkei Asia reported that five Michibiki satellites were providing positioning service before this launch, with the government aiming for seven satellites to provide full service without relying on other countries' systems. Per SpaceNews, QZS-7 also carried a US Space Force space domain awareness sensor, designed and built by MIT Lincoln Laboratory, completing the QZSS-HP hosted-payload program under a December 2020 US-Japan agreement; the sensor, in geosynchronous orbit over the Indo-Pacific, will be operated by Space Force's Mission Delta 2 and feeds the Space Surveillance Network in near real-time. A first QZSS-HP sensor flew on QZS-6 in February 2025.
