what happened

Intuitive Machines disclosed in its Aug. 13 second-quarter earnings results that it signed a contract in June for three geostationary communications satellites built on its IM 1300 bus, valued at more than $600 million over the next 30 months, per the company and SpaceNews. CEO Steve Altemus did not name the customer, saying only "we'll come out and give you a little more color on that" in the future.

why it matters

The order validates the GEO manufacturing line Intuitive Machines picked up through its Lanteris Space Systems (formerly Maxar Space Systems) acquisition, giving the lunar-lander company a second, larger commercial satellite-building business and signaling continued demand for large GEO comms platforms even as LEO constellations dominate headlines.
