what happened

United Launch Alliance named Mark Peller, its chief operating officer overseeing the Atlas and Vulcan programs, as president and CEO effective immediately, per ULA's own release. Peller succeeds John Elbon, who had served as interim CEO since December after Tory Bruno's departure and postponed his own planned retirement to lead the transition; Elbon will retire at the end of 2026. Peller has been with ULA and its predecessor companies since 1990 and led Vulcan's development from inception through certification.

why it matters

The permanent appointment ends an eight-month leadership vacancy at one of the two launch providers the Pentagon and NASA depend on for national security and science missions, putting a 35-year ULA veteran who led Vulcan's development in charge as the company works to ramp up launch cadence.
