what happened

LatConnect 60 signed a commercial contract with Transcelestial for an optical communications terminal on its SWIRSAT-1 mission plus access to Transcelestial's optical ground network, the companies announced August 20, per SpaceNews. The terminal supports data rates up to 10 Gbps; Transcelestial's ground network has two stations live today with five to six targeted by the end of 2026.

why it matters

LatConnect 60 buys the optical downlink as a service rather than building its own ground segment or seeking spectrum licenses, cutting the time to clear SWIRSAT imagery to customers; it is the second Australian mission, after Gilmour Space, to use Transcelestial's optical downlink.
