Portal Space Systems purchased a whole Falcon 9 for its first Supernova spacecraft and will resell the excess capacity as rideshare.
what happened
Portal Space Systems announced August 20 it purchased an entire SpaceX Falcon 9 launch for its Motus Via Sol 2028 mission, the first flight of its Supernova spacecraft bus, per Payload and SpaceNews. Portal expects to use about half the fairing for its own spacecraft and is working with launch integrator Maverick Space Systems to sell the remaining capacity to rideshare customers; no price was disclosed. CEO Jeff Thornburg said the deal follows the company's $50 million Series A and ongoing construction of a 65,000-square-foot manufacturing facility.

Buying a dedicated vehicle rather than booking rideshare slots is a hedge against a tightening launch market as SpaceX's own rideshare program is reported to be winding down; Portal's Supernova bus is built around its FLARE solar thermal-propulsion system, aimed at maneuverability once on orbit.
