ICEYE establishes Korea entity, names Eric Rhee to lead defense push

ICEYE said Aug. 26 it has formally established ICEYE Korea, naming Eric Rhee as its head, per the company's newsroom. Rhee, who has more than 15 years of experience in defense, aerospace and space systems and previously served as a U.S. Army Field Artillery Section Chief with combat experience in Afghanistan, holds a B.S. in Management and an MBA in Finance from Pepperdine University. ICEYE Korea's priorities include providing intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities to Korean defense and intelligence customers and supporting Korea's space and defense ecosystem through technology validation and talent development. ICEYE also signed a memorandum of understanding with Seoul National University to collaborate on synthetic aperture radar Earth observation, small satellites and AI-based satellite operations. ICEYE CEO and co-founder Rafal Modrzewski said: "Korea is an important market for us in Asia, and establishing ICEYE Korea marks the next step in our long-term commitment to the country."

ICEYE has now stood up dedicated country entities in Germany, Portugal, the UAE, India, the Netherlands and now Korea within about two months, each tied to a defense customer relationship. The pattern signals ICEYE is building a network of sovereign, in-country footholds as it competes for Korean defense ISR contracts against domestic entrants amid Seoul's own reconnaissance-satellite buildup.
