Kepler Communications will host NorthStar's optical space-domain-awareness sensors on its data-relay satellites.

Kepler Communications and NorthStar Earth & Space announced a partnership Aug. 27 combining Kepler's optical data-relay infrastructure with NorthStar's space domain awareness (SDA) services, per Via Satellite and Payload. Under a hosted-payload agreement, NorthStar's optical SDA sensors and its Space Information & Intelligence (Si2) platform will fly aboard Kepler's constellation satellites, extending NorthStar's space-based sensor network without a dedicated satellite bus, per Payload. NorthStar's existing SDA customers include the Royal Canadian Armed Forces, the U.S. Space Force's Joint Commercial Operations, DARPA, the Luxembourg Space Agency and the European Space Agency, per Via Satellite; NorthStar signed a CAD $40 million-plus SDA deal with the Royal Canadian Air Force's 3 Canadian Space Division in July and expects to go public via SPAC next quarter, per Payload. Neither company disclosed a dollar figure for the hosted-payload deal itself. Kepler Communications CEO Mina Mitry said: "Kepler's constellation was built to enable real-time space applications and move mission-critical data from orbit to the people and programs who need it most," per Via Satellite.
why it matters
Hosting SDA sensors on an existing communications constellation lets NorthStar expand its space-tracking sensor network faster and more cheaply than building dedicated satellites, while giving Kepler's data-relay business a second commercial payload use case beyond connectivity. For governments and commercial operators buying SDA data, it is another entrant competing with LeoLabs and other independent trackers as debris-monitoring and conjunction-warning demand grows.
