Astroscale Japan selected Isar Aerospace to launch its ADRAS-J2 mission on Isar's Spectrum rocket from Andoya Space in Norway, targeting Japan's fiscal year 2027 (April 2027 to March 2028), per Isar Aerospace's and Astroscale's own releases. ADRAS-J2 aims to be the first mission to capture and remove a large piece of existing orbital debris, a roughly 11-meter, 3-ton H-IIA upper stage from 2009 that Astroscale's ADRAS-J mission inspected in 2024, combining Astroscale's rendezvous and proximity-operations capability with an onboard robotic arm. The mission is Phase II of JAXA's Commercial Removal of Debris Demonstration program, whose contract with Astroscale is valued at about 12 billion yen (~$82 million); the launch agreement's value was not disclosed. It is Isar's second launch contract with the Astroscale group, after Astroscale UK's ELSA-M mission.

A successful capture and deorbit of an uncooperative, decades-old rocket body would be the first commercial demonstration that active debris removal can work on real legacy junk, not just purpose-built test targets, a capability regulators and insurers are increasingly asking constellation operators to plan for; the launch win also gives Isar a second in-space-services customer beyond its early satellite-launch contracts.
