what happened

Austrian Airlines flew its first Starlink-equipped Airbus A320neo (registration OE-LXF) on a scheduled service from Vienna to Porto on September 7, 2026, per TeslaNorth. The carrier plans to equip 20 aircraft with the Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi powered by Starlink by the end of the 2026/27 winter schedule, per aeroTELEGRAPH and Austrian Wings; the service is free for Miles & More members and Travel ID users across all cabin classes, with cabin rules against voice/video calls and livestreaming.

why it matters

Austrian is the latest Lufthansa Group carrier to go live with Starlink after Lufthansa mainline's own August 19 debut, part of a group-wide plan to equip roughly 850 aircraft across Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian, Brussels Airlines and other affiliates by 2029. It extends SpaceX's aviation Wi-Fi footprint into another major European flag-carrier group, narrowing the market for Viasat, Panasonic and Amazon's forthcoming Leo aviation service.
