what happened
Tomorrow.io selected York Space Systems to build the initial phase of its next-generation DeepSky weather-monitoring constellation on York's M-Class platform, confirming York as the customer behind a $187 million contract York had disclosed without naming the customer in March, the companies said Sept. 10, per a company release distributed on BusinessWire and Via Satellite. DeepSky will carry second-generation microwave sounders, GNSS radio occultation and reflectometry, infrared and visible imaging, and precipitation radar, extending Tomorrow.io's existing 13-satellite constellation. Per Payload, the initial phase comprises 12 satellites of about 800kg each, and Tomorrow.io's existing Gen-1 constellation will keep operating until DeepSky comes online, with no launch date given beyond "low single-digit years."
why it matters
The contract gives York, which already builds satellite buses for the SDA's Tranche 1 network and other government programs, a marquee commercial Earth-observation customer, and signals Tomorrow.io is moving its second-generation weather constellation from design into production.
