NIGCOMSAT picks Thales Alenia Space to build NigComSat-2A satellite
NIGCOMSAT · Thales Alenia Space
Nigeria's NIGCOMSAT contracted Thales Alenia Space to build the NigComSat-2A geostationary communications satellite.

what happened
Nigeria's government-owned NIGCOMSAT selected Thales Alenia Space to build NigComSat-2A, a geostationary communications satellite for television broadcasting, remote internet access, voice calls, and streaming across West, Central, and Southern Africa, per Thales Alenia Space's own release and Via Satellite. The satellite is based on Thales's Spacebus B2 platform, has a planned launch mass of nearly four tons, carries C-, Ku-, Ka-, and L-band payloads, and has an in-orbit service life of more than 15 years. Financial terms were not disclosed.
why it matters
NigComSat-2A extends Nigeria's sovereign satellite-communications capacity as African governments increasingly commission dedicated national satellites rather than buying capacity on the open market, a pattern also seen in Kazakhstan's and Portugal's recent sovereign-satellite deals. For Thales Alenia Space, the award is a fresh African government customer for its Spacebus B2 line.
