Vietjet signs Starlink deal for in-flight internet across 120-aircraft fleet

Vietjet signed a deal with Starlink for gate-to-gate in-flight internet, timed to Vietnamese leader To Lam's visit to New York.

what happened
Vietjet signed a deal with SpaceX's Starlink to bring in-flight internet across its 120-aircraft fleet, per Reuters. The formal announcement was timed to Vietnamese leader To Lam's visit to New York, after Reuters reported Sept. 16 that Vietnamese and US companies planned to sign a raft of agreements during the visit, including the planned Starlink contract covering Vietjet's fleet, per documents it reviewed. Starlink said on X that passengers and crew on Vietjet flights will soon have access to its high-speed, low-latency internet "from gate to gate," per TeslaNorth, extending connectivity through boarding, taxi, takeoff and landing rather than just cruise altitude. Vietjet first signed an initial agreement with Starlink Services Vietnam in May 2026. Neither company has said when the first connected flights will take off or which aircraft will be equipped first, per TeslaNorth.
why it matters
Vietjet joins a growing list of more than 40 airlines that have selected Starlink for in-flight connectivity, per TeslaNorth, extending SpaceX's aviation Wi-Fi footprint in Southeast Asia and adding another data point against Viasat, Panasonic and Amazon's forthcoming Leo aviation service in the region. The deal's timing alongside a head-of-state visit also underscores how Starlink access has become a visible marker of US-Vietnam commercial ties.
