Firefly signs Starcloud to test lunar data center capability aboard Elytra
Firefly Aerospace · Starcloud
Firefly agreed to fly Starcloud's SC-1L AI computing payload on its Elytra vehicle to test a future lunar data center.

what happened
Firefly Aerospace signed a commercial payload agreement with Starcloud to fly Starcloud's SC-1L AI computing payload aboard Firefly's Elytra orbital vehicle in lunar orbit, the company said. Starcloud is being added to Firefly's third lunar mission, targeted for no earlier than 2028, on which Elytra will first serve as the transfer vehicle and communications relay for Firefly's Blue Ghost lander before remaining in lunar orbit for five years to host customer payloads. The SC-1L payload will process data captured by Firefly's Solux vision system, perform AI computing on orbit, and transmit the processed data to Earth.
why it matters
Firefly is positioning Elytra as a long-lived, multi-customer platform rather than a single-mission spacecraft, and this is its first named commercial payload for that role beyond its own lander support. For Starcloud, it extends an orbital AI-computing demonstration already flown in low Earth orbit out to the Moon, a step toward selling on-orbit compute as a service rather than just proving the concept.
