Overview Energy wins Pentagon contract for space solar power beacon
Overview Energy
The Pentagon's OECIF fund is paying Overview Energy to build a homing beacon that lets its satellites lock onto ground power receivers.

what happened
The Department of War's Operational Energy Capability Improvement Fund (OECIF) awarded Overview Energy a contract, announced Sept. 30, to design, build and test a homing beacon for the company's space-based solar energy system, which converts sunlight to near-infrared laser light for transmission to ground receivers. The beacon lets Overview's satellites locate a receiver site, lock on and beam power precisely while preventing spoofing or hijacking of the signal, per the company. A company spokesperson declined to disclose the contract's value, citing customer constraints, per Breaking Defense; the hardware is to integrate into Overview's first satellite for a planned 2028 demonstration and will also serve as baseline ground hardware for a GEO constellation the company plans to start deploying in 2030.
why it matters
The award gives Overview Energy, which separately signed Meta to up to 1 gigawatt of future space-based solar capacity, a second funded customer type (the Pentagon, via an operational-energy fund focused on reducing military fuel-supply dependence) for the same beaming architecture. It is the latest sign that space-based solar power beaming, also being tested in orbit this week by Cowboy Space and Star Catcher, is attracting both commercial and defense money even before any company has flown a full-scale system.
