Kyrgyzstan launches its first national satellite on SpaceX rideshare
Kyrgyz Asman · SpaceX
Kyrgyzstan's first satellite, a 5 kg nanosat, reached orbit Oct. 1 on SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission.

what happened
Kyrgyzstan's first domestically built satellite reached orbit Oct. 1 aboard SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission, which lifted off from Vandenberg Space Force Base carrying about 130 payloads, per TASS and Tech Times. The 5-kilogram satellite was built by Kyrgyz Electronics for the state-owned Kyrgyz Asman program over about two and a half years at a cost of roughly 10-12 million som ($114,000-$140,000), with unspecified cooperation from the United Arab Emirates, per Tech Times and the Times of Central Asia. President Sadyr Japarov attended the launch during a US visit and said the satellite ends Kyrgyzstan's reliance on buying observation data from other countries, per 24.kg.
why it matters
The launch makes Kyrgyzstan the latest government to field a sovereign Earth-observation capability by flying a low-cost nanosat on a SpaceX rideshare rather than commissioning or buying a full satellite, a path other budget-constrained governments are likely to keep following. For SpaceX, it is one more sovereign-EO customer added to the Transporter manifest rather than a market-moving deal.
