Kymeta wins DoD contract to turn Osprey u8 terminal into edge platform
Kymeta
Kymeta will develop a swappable cartridge adding compute, SDR and RF sensing to its Osprey u8 satcom terminal for the DoD.

what happened
Kymeta said the U.S. Department of Defense awarded it a development contract to build an enhanced cartridge adding compute, software-defined radio and networking into its Osprey u8 multi-orbit satcom terminal, per the company's own release. The cartridge, which swaps into the terminal's existing modular architecture without new hardware, is meant to let the terminal process tactical communications data locally, add RF Space Domain Awareness sensing to detect interference and characterize satellite behavior, and support additional software-defined missions over time. Kymeta did not disclose a contract value or the specific DoD branch; the award follows a $20 million DoD order in September for more than 100 Osprey u8 terminals, per Via Satellite.
why it matters
Adding edge compute and RF-sensing to an already-fielded terminal line extends Kymeta's existing DoD terminal install base into space domain awareness and JADC2 networking roles without requiring new procurement, a software-upgrade path that competing flat-panel terminal makers chasing the same military budget line will need to match.
