ArkEdge wins JAXA contracts for two lunar navigation technology demos
ArkEdge Space · JAXA
JAXA tapped the Japanese startup to study a lunar rover navigation receiver and build a lunar-satellite signal-reception demo.

what happened
JAXA awarded ArkEdge Space two contracts to advance lunar navigation technology, per Payload. Under the first, dubbed MoonQuest, ArkEdge will study adding a Lunar Augmented Navigation Service (LANS) receiver to the pressurized crew rover JAXA is developing for the US-led Artemis program, including determining the receiver's mass, power and heat-dissipation requirements and a testing and integration timeline. Under the second, ArkEdge will build a receiver demo to detect signals from Japan's Lunar Navigation Satellite System demonstration satellite, also built by ArkEdge, designed to also receive signals from NASA and ESA satellites. ArkEdge did not disclose the value of either award, per Payload.
why it matters
Lunar navigation is infrastructure every Artemis-era lunar operator will eventually need, and JAXA is building its share of it through a domestic small-satellite company rather than a prime contractor, a path other lunar-economy suppliers can point to when pitching national space agencies on PNT work. Designing NASA and ESA signal compatibility into the demo from the outset also signals Japan wants its navigation system to serve as a shared layer for international lunar traffic rather than a standalone national system.
