what happened
United said Starlink Wi-Fi is now installed on more than 635 United mainline and United Express aircraft, covering nearly half of its roughly 2,500-plus daily departures, with installations continuing at about 20 aircraft a week toward a completion target of end of 2027, per a press release distributed via PR Newswire. The airline launched a new tool, StarlinkTracker.United.com, letting customers enter a flight number and date to check whether Starlink is scheduled on that flight, see installation progress by aircraft type, and view equipped-departure rates at its Newark, Chicago, Washington Dulles, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Houston and Denver hubs. United also extended its "Switch to Better Wi-Fi" status-match offer, originally set to end Oct. 1, through Oct. 22, after daily status-match applications ran 275% above pre-campaign levels. On Oct. 22, CEO Scott Kirby said United will "cross the 50% threshold this week" for Starlink-equipped flights, with the entire fleet enabled by the end of next year, and that United is becoming "the only global U.S. airline with Starlink at scale," adding "we already see customers moving from other airlines today"; Musk replied on X that "Starlink moves the needle," per The Motley Fool and Yahoo Finance/Benzinga. Kirby called Delta's choice of Amazon Leo over Starlink "a mistake," per TeslaNorth, as United's Starlink-equipped fleet grew to 661 aircraft, with Starlink carrying 5.4 million United passengers in September, per TeslaNorth and Teslarati. As of Nov. 2, 671 aircraft, or half of United's daily flights, carry Starlink, with the original two-to-three-year rollout timeline cut to 18 months; CISO Deneen DeFiore said United is deploying defensive AI to scan its codebase and is building a cockpit interface to bring Starlink to the flight deck, as GPS jamming and spoofing incidents affecting commercial aviation have risen into the tens of thousands per month, per Via Satellite.
why it matters
United is one of several US carriers racing to retrofit fleets with LEO connectivity, and a public tracker tied to flight number turns Starlink availability into a marketable, checkable feature rather than a vague rollout promise, the kind of consumer-facing proof point that can pressure rivals still mid-rollout (American, Delta via Amazon Leo) to publicize their own progress.
