Firefly completes design review for NASA's MoonFall lunar south pole mission
Firefly's Elytra spacecraft passed its preliminary design review four months after contract award, with launch targeted for late 2028.

what happened
Firefly Aerospace said its Elytra spacecraft completed NASA's preliminary design review for the MoonFall mission, less than four months after contract award. The review, conducted with NASA and JPL, covered Elytra's structural, thermal, propulsion, avionics, trajectory, guidance and navigation, and communications systems. Elytra will carry JPL-built drones from Earth orbit to lunar orbit and deploy them over the Moon's south pole, where the drones will use optical cameras to survey terrain and map landing sites and resources ahead of future human missions. Firefly targets launch readiness in late 2028 and will next pursue a critical design review.
why it matters
MoonFall is robotic reconnaissance for NASA's human lunar south pole plans, and a fast, on-schedule PDR is a data point for Firefly as it competes for more Artemis-adjacent robotic work. No dollar figure is stated, but the mission adds to Firefly's pipeline of lunar contracts alongside its Blue Ghost landers.
