Shield Space launches UK Space Superiority Coalition
Shield Space
Shield Space formed a coalition of UK space companies to pitch a commercially built in-orbit defense force to NATO.

what happened
Shield Space, a UK orbital-security startup building autonomous guidance and space-control systems, launched the UK Space Superiority Coalition on Oct. 28, bringing together AstroAnalytica, Goonhilly, Magdrive, Mutable Tactics, Optera, Third Planet Orbital and other UK space companies, per Payload. The coalition's proposed first mission, called Project SPEAR, is awaiting UK government approval, per Payload. Shield Space CTO Dan Molland said the goal is to "deliver a space-based carrier strike, which is all about deploying entire swarms of interceptors," to give Western militaries more options to respond to threats on orbit; the coalition named six priority areas, including autonomy and guidance, propulsion, space domain awareness, battle management, in-orbit servicing, and what the companies call "effectors," per Payload.
why it matters
The coalition is pitching itself as a commercially led alternative to government-built space-defense programs, aiming to meet the UK's 2026 space strategy "control of space" requirement; it comes the same month a Russian satellite closed to within kilometers of ICEYE's ICEYE-X36, the kind of incident the coalition's founders cite as proof Western militaries currently have few commercial options to respond on orbit.
