  • 2026-10-30Space.com adds that Apeiron is designed for twice-weekly flights over a 500-plus-mission lifetime, dropping from carrier aircraft VMS Eve at about 45,000 feet before igniting its rocket motor.

what happened

Virgin Galactic named its first Delta-class spaceplane Apeiron and flew it Oct. 28 from its Mesa, Arizona factory to Spaceport America, New Mexico, mated to carrier aircraft VMS Eve, ahead of avionics software validation and flight testing, per the company's own release. The name was chosen by a public vote drawing responses from 83 countries, per Virgin Galactic. Apeiron can carry up to six passengers, two more than VSS Unity, and Virgin Galactic is targeting as many as eight spaceflights per month per vehicle once operational, with the first commercial flight expected in early Q2 2027 and seats priced above $750,000, per Flying Magazine. Space.com, citing Virgin Galactic, reported Apeiron is designed to fly twice per week over a vehicle lifetime of more than 500 missions, dropping from VMS Eve at about 45,000 feet before igniting its rocket motor for the climb to suborbital space.

why it matters

Virgin Galactic has not flown a tourism mission since VSS Unity's last flight in June 2024, per Ars Technica, so a flight-test-ready Delta vehicle is the clearest sign yet that its bet on a much higher commercial flight cadence is moving past paper targets. The eight-flights-a-month goal and the early-2027 commercial debut are still unproven until Apeiron completes captive-carry, glide and powered flight tests; resellers and prospective astronauts weighing the $750,000-plus ticket price should watch the test campaign's pace, not just the schedule target.
