what happened

Telesat CEO Dan Goldberg told investors Oct. 29 that the company is delaying global service entry for its Lightspeed broadband constellation by three months, from the end of the first quarter of 2028 to the end of the second quarter, per Via Satellite and SpaceNews. Goldberg said Telesat is "loath to use one of our valuable Falcon 9 launch slots" to fly its two initial pathfinder satellites, so the pair will instead fly as a rideshare on a third-party Falcon 9 mission targeted around June 2027, test in orbit for about two months, and then Telesat will proceed with its own Falcon 9 campaign carrying 15 satellites per launch. Telesat adjusted its satellite deployment sequence so that service to higher latitudes, including Canada's military Arctic coverage under the ESCP-P program and other northern rural broadband commitments, still starts by the end of the first quarter of 2028 as previously planned.

why it matters

The delay is Telesat's second slip to Lightspeed's in-service date and shows how tight the Falcon 9 launch market has become even for an operator with its own dedicated SpaceX launch agreement; Goldberg's framing, protecting paying Lightspeed capacity over speeding up two test satellites, treats launch slots as a scarce resource to ration rather than spend freely on schedule risk. For government and enterprise customers waiting on global coverage, the delay pushes full service a further three months out, even as Telesat protects its highest-priority Arctic and Canadian commitments.
