Ukraine's Starshield contract with the US set to expire in 2027
A Ukrainian diplomat says Kyiv's Starshield deal with Washington expires by mid-2027 and talks on a replacement are just starting.
what happened
Denys Sienik, chargé d'affaires at Ukraine's embassy in Washington, said Ukraine's contract for the US government's Starshield satellite service expires by the middle of next year and that Kyiv is pushing to start negotiations on a new one, per Reuters: "The contract expires next year for Starshield. And we understand that it requires time to negotiate a new one," Sienik said, adding "now is actually the time." Sienik also told Breaking Defense that Ukraine still has not received an explanation from the Pentagon, the White House, or SpaceX, which operates Starshield for the US government, about the October incident in which speed limits were suddenly imposed on Ukraine's military Starshield terminals: "Nobody provided answers." Sienik said Ukraine currently has no effective alternative to Starshield.
why it matters
Starshield's speed-limit incident last month already showed how directly a contract or configuration change by SpaceX can affect Ukraine's ability to intercept drones in real time; a contract that lapses in mid-2027 without a signed successor would be a far larger version of the same risk. It is also a reminder to other government Starshield and Starlink customers that their own service continuity rests on a renewable US government contract, not a standing commercial product.
