BlackSky wins NRO contract modification to accelerate AROS broad-area imaging satellites

BlackSky

The mod funds a path to a flight-ready broad-area mapping system in 2028; NRO puts total contract value above $150M, per Defense Daily.

what happened

BlackSky was awarded a modification to its existing National Reconnaissance Office contract to accelerate development of its AROS broad-area collection satellites as a commercial alternative for foundation imagery. BlackSky says the effort funds a direct path toward a flight-ready multi-spectral, large-area mapping spacecraft and foundation data collection system in 2028. BlackSky's release states no dollar figure; per Defense Daily, the NRO called it an 8-figure modification bringing total contract value to over $150 million.

why it matters

The NRO is paying to stand up a commercial alternative for foundation imagery, the base-layer mapping data historically supplied by legacy primes. If AROS flies in 2028, BlackSky moves from tasking-centric monitoring into the foundation-imagery market that Maxar's heritage systems have owned, with the US government underwriting development.
