ICEYE wins Iberdrola pilot deal to monitor grid amid extreme weather
ICEYE · Iberdrola
Iberdrola picked ICEYE for a 12-month satellite grid-monitoring pilot.
what happened
ICEYE said Iberdrola, which it describes as Europe's largest electricity utility, selected it for a 12-month pilot project starting in Spain, using ICEYE's SAR satellite data to monitor Iberdrola's electricity network for windstorm, wildfire, and hurricane risk. ICEYE said the deal was the winning entry in Iberdrola's PERSEO open-innovation program, which drew more than 40 proposals from 10 countries, and that the pilot uses its Flood Solutions Suite with plans to extend monitoring to the US and Australia.
why it matters
Iberdrola says it operates over 1.4 million kilometers of transmission and distribution lines serving more than 100 million people, so a successful pilot could turn into a recurring monitoring contract at utility scale. It also signals SAR earth observation data moving beyond insurance and government clients into utility grid-resilience budgets, a vertical ICEYE and its SAR competitors have been courting.
