Blue Origin has seven Blue Moon landers in production, first slips to 2027

Blue Origin

Blue Origin says seven Blue Moon lunar landers are in production, with the first cargo lander now slipping to Q1 2027.

what happened

Per SpaceNews, Blue Origin senior vice president for lunar permanence John Couluris said the company has seven Blue Moon lunar landers in production: four Mark 1 cargo landers, including the first ("Endurance"), now targeted for Q1 2027 instead of late 2026, a second carrying NASA's VIPER rover for late 2027, and two more carrying Lunar Terrain Vehicle rovers for 2028; and three Mark 2 landers, one uncrewed low Earth orbit demonstration for 2027 ahead of the Artemis 3 mission with NASA's Orion, and two "Mark 2 Alpha" vehicles for an uncrewed 2028 demonstration followed by a crewed landing. Couluris said the work is continuing while Blue Origin recovers from the May 28, 2026 New Glenn pad explosion, saying "we have not slowed down."

why it matters

A parallel four-lander, three-lander production run, rather than a single prototype, changes the risk profile for every NASA Artemis milestone payment tied to Blue Moon, and the schedule slip on the first cargo lander is the first public change since the pad explosion. NASA officials have said separately they are exploring flying an early Blue Moon Mark 1 mission on a different rocket while New Glenn returns to service, so the production pace matters regardless of which vehicle flies it first. For companies competing for lunar lander and rover contracts, it signals Blue Origin is scaling manufacturing before a single lander has flown.
