Simera Sense to supply imagers for Canary Islands EO constellation
Simera Sense · Telespazio · AVS
Per SpaceNews, Simera Sense won a deal to supply eight multispectral imagers for a new regional EO constellation.
what happened
SpaceNews reports Belgium's Simera Sense won a contract to provide eight MultiScape100 multispectral sensors for the Canary Islands satellite constellation, a regional Earth observation system commissioned by Tenerife's Cabildo to monitor wildfires and volcanic activity. Spain's AVS is building the three operational satellites (plus one tech demonstrator) that will carry the sensors, under prime contractor Telespazio Iberica, which SpaceNews says separately won 21.3 million euros ($24.4 million) from the island government for the program. SpaceNews reports a demonstrator flight in the second half of 2027 and the operational constellation launching in the second half of 2028.
why it matters
It's a small deal, but it is another regional government standing up its own sovereign EO constellation rather than buying imagery, a pattern also seen in ICEYE's recent Portugal and Norway wins. Simera Sense's win also shows sensor suppliers riding that wave without needing to be a prime.
