Telesat Lightspeed wins Canadian Arctic military connectivity deal
Telesat
Canada's Armed Forces picked Telesat Lightspeed for secure Arctic military satellite connectivity under ESCP-P.
what happened
Telesat Lightspeed reached an agreement in principle with Canada's Defence Investment Agency to provide secure Military Ka-band connectivity to the Canadian Armed Forces across the Arctic, from 65 to 90 degrees North latitude, under the Enhanced Satellite Communications Project - Polar (ESCP-P), per Telesat's press release. Deliverables include user terminals, ground and control infrastructure, and training and support services; Telesat expects a definitive contract within weeks. The agreement builds on a Strategic Partnership Agreement Canada announced with Telesat and MDA Space in late 2025, and Telesat says it does not affect Lightspeed's Q1 2028 global service timeline.
why it matters
A NATO government committing to Telesat Lightspeed for a defense-grade Arctic network signals sovereign defense procurement is becoming a core Lightspeed revenue line rather than a side bet, and gives Telesat a reference win to point to against Starlink and OneWeb/Eutelsat in other government tenders.
