Venus Aerospace raises $91 million to scale detonation rocket engine
Venus Aerospace
Venus Aerospace closed a $91 million Series B to move its rotating detonation rocket engine from flight test to production.

what happened
Venus Aerospace raised $91 million in a Series B round led by Mercury Fund, with Lockheed Martin Ventures, MESH, PEAK6, Draper Associates, Starboard Star Venture Capital and Green Sands Equity also participating, the company said in a July 8 announcement. Per SpaceNews, the round follows Venus's May 2026 flight test of a 2,000-pound-thrust rotating detonation rocket engine (RDRE) at Spaceport America, and the company says the funding will scale the engine from flight-tested prototype toward production propulsion systems for launch, orbital-transfer and lander applications.
why it matters
Rotating detonation engines promise higher combustion efficiency than conventional rocket engines, and Lockheed Martin Ventures' participation signals a prime contractor backing the technology for defense and launch use rather than treating it as a research curiosity. A working RDRE supply chain would give launch-vehicle and in-space transportation developers a domestically manufactured propulsion option as they look to diversify beyond established engine makers.
