The Council of the EU decided that dissemination of Copernicus Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 data over a defined area of the Gulf of Oman must be delayed by 24 hours from acquisition, in a decision published July 14, per SpaceNews and Agence Europe. The Council said the delay follows a US diplomatic request made May 26 and is meant to prevent Copernicus products from being "used by any third State or non-State actor" in a way that could threaten EU, member-state or allied interests in the region; the restricted area covers shipping routes leading to and from the Strait of Hormuz. The decision does not state when the delay took effect or when it will be reviewed. A European Commission spokesperson called it "a technical measure to protect against possible security risks" that "many other satellite operators" also take.
