what happened

Flexell Space, a space-solar-cell developer that originated as a Hanwha Systems venture, completed a $20 million Series A round, per SpaceNews. Existing investors InterVest, L&S Venture Capital and QUAD Ventures made follow-on investments, joined by new investors including Mirae Asset Venture Investment, Mirae Asset Capital, Industrial Bank of Korea, NH Venture Investment, Korea Investment & Securities and the Korea Credit Guarantee Fund. SpaceNews reports the company has now raised about $25 million cumulatively.

why it matters

Flexell's perovskite and CIGS cells target lower weight and cost than the gallium arsenide cells that dominate satellite power today; a bench of Korean state-linked investors signals domestic industrial-policy backing for a supply-chain alternative that satellite bus makers will want to qualify against incumbent cell suppliers.
