what happened

Belgium's Defence Minister Theo Francken announced Belgium will invest more than 200 million euros ($233 million) in the Galo program, a constellation of several dozen low-Earth-orbit imaging satellites, with initial capability targeted for 2027 and full operation by 2030, per Anadolu Agency and Belga. Belgium currently relies on French satellites for military imagery with only a few minutes of daily access; Belgian companies, including Walloon manufacturer Aerospacelab, are eligible to compete for the procurement, and Belgium expects to rely on foreign launch providers such as SpaceX since it has no launch site of its own.

why it matters

Galo is another European government committing a nine-figure sum to a sovereign EO constellation, following Italy's IRIDE, and opens a domestic procurement that Aerospacelab and other Belgian satellite builders can compete for; it also adds to European defence demand for dedicated launch capacity from providers like SpaceX pending any domestic European alternative.
