A SpaceX Falcon 9 launched 21 York Space Systems-built satellites from Vandenberg Space Force Base on July 16 for the Space Development Agency's Tranche 1 Transport Layer, mission designation Tranche 1 Transport Layer-E, per SpaceNews and Space.com. The launch brings the constellation to 63 satellites on orbit, half of the planned 126-satellite Transport Layer, according to SDA Director Gurpartap Sandhoo. It resumes SDA's deployment cadence after a months-long pause caused by thermal-modeling and propulsion issues on the initial satellites. Sandhoo said August 24 at the Small Satellite Conference that on-orbit checkouts for this second York-built plane are progressing two to three times faster than the first plane, though optical-terminal and focal-plane-array supply constraints remain, per Via Satellite; he said the next plane, built by Northrop Grumman, is expected to launch within weeks.
