The House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence advanced the 2027 Intelligence Authorization Act (H.R. 9624) this week, per Payload. The bill would let the US government block commercial Earth observation operators from sharing "sensitive imagery that could harm national security" with the public, ending their current ability to self-regulate what reaches the public. Planet Labs, Vantor, and ICEYE were named responding to the bill: Planet already paused public imagery over Iran and Gulf states in March, and ICEYE said the measure could deepen ties between the EO community and the Department of Defense.
why it matters
If enacted, the bill would replace voluntary holds like Planet's Iran pause with a codified government veto over what commercial EO operators can publish, a real change to how EO firms manage their public-facing products.
