what happened

NASA announced on July 24 that it selected Advanced Space to develop CAPSTONE 02, a successor to the original CAPSTONE cislunar pathfinder mission. The mission pairs two identical 400-kilogram satellites, built by Lockheed Martin subsidiary Terran Orbital, to demonstrate autonomous navigation, rendezvous and proximity operations in a three-body cislunar orbit, carrying an optical imaging payload from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, per NASA's own announcement. NASA targets a 2027 launch; per SpaceNews, House appropriators have directed NASA to spend $20-60 million on the mission in fiscal year 2027, though NASA and Advanced Space have not disclosed a contract value.

why it matters

Cislunar rendezvous and proximity-operations data feeds directly into approaches like Orion's rendezvous with a lunar lander, and NASA's return to Advanced Space and Terran Orbital signals where the agency is placing its bets for cislunar navigation infrastructure ahead of a busier Artemis cadence.
