what happened

Space Systems Command awarded Sphinx Defense a $287 million contract, via Other Transaction Authority through the Space Enterprise Consortium, to develop mission planning application software that plans, allocates and manages communications across the future Evolved Strategic Satellite Communications (ESS) constellation, per SpaceNews. Boeing is building the ESS satellites, which will replace the Lockheed Martin-built Advanced Extremely High Frequency (AEHF) system, under a separate $2.8 billion Space Force contract covering the first two spacecraft with options for two more.

why it matters

The award is a large jump for Sphinx Defense, a ground-software specialist previously reported at contracts in the single-digit millions under the Space Force's Joint Antenna Marketplace effort, and puts it inside the mission-planning layer of the successor to the US military's primary jam-resistant strategic communications constellation. It also underscores the Space Force's continued use of OTA vehicles to bring smaller commercial software vendors into strategic-communications ground systems rather than relying solely on the prime contractor.
