what happened

New Zealand-based Outlier Space raised a $7.35 million pre-seed round led by Global from Day One, with Nova Threshold, Brian Cartmell, Airtree, Icehouse Ventures, Investible and Side Stage Ventures also participating, per Payload. The company is developing a reusable Earth-return capsule, comparable in interior volume to three ISS mid-deck lockers, for a debut mission no earlier than 2028; it plans to fly under an FAA license.

why it matters

Outlier is betting that demand for microgravity manufacturing and research return slots will shift to dedicated reentry vehicles as the ISS winds down after 2030, joining a growing pool of reentry-capsule developers competing on cost per kilogram returned rather than raw capacity.
