what happened

The China Satellite Navigation Office said it completed an in-orbit upgrade of the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System, adjusting the operational status of certain satellites via secure telecommand uplinks without launching new spacecraft, per Xinhua. CSNO states the 50-satellite constellation now delivers global positioning accuracy better than 10 meters, velocity accuracy better than 0.2 meters per second, timing accuracy within 20 nanoseconds, and Precise Point Positioning accuracy of 0.3 meters horizontal and 0.6 meters vertical.

why it matters

The upgrade is a routine performance refresh of an already-operational sovereign constellation rather than a capacity expansion, but it is a dated program milestone for a system that competes with GPS and Galileo for global PNT market share, including in commercial receiver and timing markets outside China.
