what happened

Hughes Network Systems, EchoStar's satellite broadband subsidiary, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on August 2 in the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas, per Advanced Television. Hughes had $102 million in cash on hand against $1.5 billion in borrowings that matured August 1, and filed without a pre-negotiated restructuring plan. EchoStar's own SEC 8-K, filed the same day, discloses an Item 1.03 bankruptcy event.

why it matters

It is the second EchoStar-family Chapter 11 in five weeks, after Dish DBS's prepackaged filing on June 30, and confirms Hughes itself, EchoStar's GEO satellite broadband arm, is now in bankruptcy protection alongside its pay-TV siblings. Advanced Television ties the filing to a sustained subscriber exodus to Starlink's LEO service; the case will test how much of Hughes's GEO broadband and enterprise business survives restructuring and who ends up owning its assets.
