what happened

Viasat reported fiscal first-quarter 2027 revenue of $1.2 billion, essentially flat year over year, per Via Satellite and an Investing.com earnings-call transcript. The company said its second ViaSat-3 satellite, F2, has completed deployments and in-orbit testing and is expected to enter service by September 2026, while the third, F3, has completed reflector deployment and is undergoing in-orbit testing ahead of an expected service entry over the Asia-Pacific region in late August or early September 2026. Viasat's Defense and Advanced Technologies segment reported $331 million in revenue, up 4% year over year, with contract awards up 22% to a record $524 million, including a Space Force award to build a maneuverable geostationary satellite under the Protected Tactical SATCOM-Global program.

why it matters

F2 and F3 entering service would give Viasat its full three-satellite ViaSat-3 global broadband fleet for the first time, years behind the original schedule; the capacity finally reaching commercial service matters for the aviation and maritime broadband customers who have waited through the delays, while record DAT contract awards show the defense side offsetting softness in commercial satcom.
