what happened
Optus said the Mission Extension Vehicle (MEV), operated by Northrop Grumman's SpaceLogistics, undocked from the Optus D3 geostationary satellite on Aug. 12 after providing over a year of attitude control and station-keeping. A Northrop Grumman Mission Robotic Vehicle (MRV) and a Mission Extension Pod (MEP) are already in orbit and undergoing orbit-raising, with rendezvous and MEP installation targeted for late 2027, per Optus and Via Satellite.

Project Aurora is one of the first commercial demonstrations of robotic, multi-satellite servicing rather than a single dedicated docking vehicle; a successful MEP installation would extend Optus D3's service life roughly six years into the 2030s and gives GEO operators facing satellite replacement costs a data point on whether robotic servicing is commercially viable at scale.
