Airtel Africa unveiled commercial satellite-to-mobile service in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the first time the Airtel-Starlink direct-to-device partnership has moved from pilot to full commercial deployment anywhere in Africa, per Space in Africa and Developing Telecoms. The service supports WhatsApp and SMS on compatible LTE Android smartphones with no separate terminal, works off an existing Airtel DRC data bundle or roaming, and offers a 30-day free trial; Airtel cited about 650 satellites in Starlink's direct-to-device constellation. The partnership was announced in December 2025 and piloted in Kenya in March.
