Per Aviation Week, Anduril's first fully-integrated, self-funded satellite is now operating on orbit after launching July 7 on a SpaceX Falcon 9 Transporter-17 rideshare mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base. Per Gunter's Space Page, the 200 kg satellite, built on Apex's Aries bus, carries electro-optical and long-wave infrared sensors in a roughly 590 km, 97.76-degree orbit for a technology-demonstration mission described as validating geospatial and space domain awareness sensing.
why it matters
Anduril designing, building, and flying its own sensing satellite in under two years, on its own money, signals the defense-tech company intends to compete directly with EO and space-domain-awareness incumbents rather than stay a payload/software supplier to them.
