SES expands strategic investment in Elveo Mobile's direct-to-device network

SES announced Aug. 17 an expanded strategic investment in and collaboration with Elveo Mobile, the direct-to-device operator formed from the completed merger of Lynk Global and Omnispace, per SES's own newsroom. SES will give Elveo access to its global space and ground infrastructure and support its go-to-market, engineering, operations and regulatory work; the companies will also collaborate on global spectrum initiatives. In return, SES's mobile, enterprise and government customers gain access to Elveo's LEO D2D network alongside SES's own GEO and MEO satellites. No dollar figure was disclosed. SES CEO Adel Al-Saleh said: "Elveo is an agile, forward-thinking innovator, and exactly the type of company we sought as our strategic partner for direct-to-device services." Elveo CEO Ramu Potarazu said the investment "will accelerate Elveo's time to market."
why it matters
This is SES's entry into the direct-to-device race via investment rather than building its own D2D constellation, following the Lynk/Omnispace merger that created Elveo on Aug. 14. Pairing Elveo's LEO D2D network with SES's existing GEO/MEO fleet and ground infrastructure gives SES's telecom and government customers a multi-orbit D2D option without SES having to launch new D2D-specific satellites itself.
